In the past, police officers have denied African Americans their basic human rights because of the stereotypes that were held against them. This has led to Blacks being treated as second class citizens. After segregation was deemed as illegal, police still continued to abuse Blacks because of racist ideas that were still present in society. Some of these ideas included that Blacks were an inferior race and Blacks were more likely to cause crimes because of their race. Blacks continued to fight for their rights in mostly non-violent ways. This connects to present day issues with the conflict of police relations with people, especially Blacks. Throughout the history of Portland, abuse of power, and racism from members of the Portland Police bureau have prevented African Americans from having basic rights, reflecting modern day issues with police brutality.
